Cetearyl alcohol is a blend of cetyl and stearyl alcohols, both solid waxes derived from coconut or palm. In a formula it does two things: it stabilises the emulsion so oil and water do not separate, and it lays down an emollient layer that leaves skin feeling smooth rather than tight.
