How to Use

Step 1: Cleanse the skin thoroughly, then tone.
Step 2: Apply a thin layer over the entire affected area, or dab onto individual blemishes as a spot treatment. Full-face use suits oily and acne-prone skin.
Step 3: Start with one application daily, then gradually increase to two or three times daily if needed or as directed by a doctor. PCA Skin recommends twice daily.
Step 4: If bothersome dryness or peeling occurs, reduce to once a day or every other day, or use as a spot treatment only.
Step 5: Follow with moisturizer, and with a broad-spectrum sunscreen during the day.

Caution: For external use only. Skin irritation and dryness are more likely if you use another topical acne medication at the same time; if irritation occurs, use only one topical acne medication at a time. Avoid the eye area. Keep out of reach of children. If swallowed, get medical help or contact a Poison Control Center right away.

How is this different from the Prebiotic Gel Cleanser?

Both are 2% salicylic acid acne treatments. The Acne Control Prebiotic Gel Cleanser rinses off as your first step. Acne Gel stays on the skin after cleansing and toning, so it keeps working on breakouts, oil and post-breakout marks. You can use both, but combining acne medications makes dryness more likely, so add one at a time.

Should I use it as a spot treatment or all over?

Either. PCA Skin recommends spot treatment for any skin type, and a thin layer over the whole face if your skin is oily or acne-prone. If dryness occurs with full-face use, switch to spot treatment only.

How soon will I see results?

PCA Skin says the look of breakouts can improve in as little as three days. Preventing new breakouts takes consistent use, so give it several weeks before judging. Deep, painful or cystic acne needs a provider's plan, so book a consultation if that's what you're seeing.

Will it sting or dry out my skin?

It can, especially at first. It contains alcohol plus salicylic and mandelic acids. The label recommends starting with one application a day and building up only if needed. If dryness or peeling bothers you, cut back to once a day or every other day, and follow with a lightweight moisturizer.

Can I use it with retinol or other acne treatments?

Carefully. The Drug Facts label warns that skin irritation and dryness are more likely when you use another topical acne medication at the same time, and to use only one at a time if irritation occurs. Many clients alternate nights with a retinol. If you're pregnant or nursing, check with your doctor before using salicylic acid.

How long does a bottle last?
