Rebuilding the Mortar Between Skin Cells
Picture the top layer of skin as brickwork: the cells are the bricks and a lipid matrix of ceramides, cholesterol, and fatty acids is the mortar. When that mortar thins — from age, over-exfoliation, cold weather, or a course of retinoids — skin loses water faster and begins to look rough, tight, and reactive. Topical ceramides top the mixture back up, which is why they turn up so consistently in post-procedure and recovery formulas.
This collection includes the EltaMD UV Skin Recovery Broad Spectrum SPF 50, Alastin Skincare Ultra Light Moisturizer, Epicutis Hyvia Crème, and Alastin Skincare Restorative Skin Complex. EltaMD, Alastin Skincare, and Epicutis all use them heavily.
Do ceramides work better alongside other lipids?
Typically yes — formulas that pair ceramides with cholesterol and fatty acids in a balanced ratio are the ones designed around barrier support.
