A Building Block of the Skin's Own Barrier
Phytosphingosine is a sphingoid base — the backbone that ceramides are built on. Skin makes it naturally, and cosmetic formulas include it to support the look and feel of a barrier that is smooth rather than rough and tight. It is almost always found in company with ceramides and cholesterol rather than standing on its own.
Revision Skincare uses it throughout the DEJ line, including DEJ Face Cream and DEJ Night Cream, as well as in DermProtect Barrier Defense. SkinBetter Science includes it in Alto Defense Serum, and Obagi in Rebalance Skin Barrier Recovery Cream.
Is phytosphingosine a ceramide?
Not quite — it is a precursor. Ceramides form when a sphingoid base like phytosphingosine joins a fatty acid, which is why the two so often appear together on the same panel.
