Polysorbate-60, the Reason Your Cream Stays Smooth
Oil and water separate on their own; polysorbate-60 is one of the workhorses that stops them. It is a nonionic surfactant derived from sorbitol and stearic acid, and it sits at the boundary between the oil phase and the water phase to hold a lotion, cream or gel-cream in a single stable emulsion. It also helps disperse fragrance and pigment evenly, which matters in anything tinted.

Is polysorbate-60 safe for acne-prone skin?
Generally yes. It is water-dispersible rather than occlusive, so it does not sit on the surface the way a heavy emollient can, and it appears in plenty of gel-textured products chosen specifically for oilier skin.
