How to Use

Step 1: Each morning, cleanse with Obagi Nu-Derm Foaming Gel or Gentle Cleanser and pat skin dry.
Step 2: Apply Nu-Derm Toner, then Clear Fx if it's part of your routine.
Step 3: Smooth a thin, even layer of Exfoderm Forte over the face, avoiding the eye area.
Step 4: Follow with moisturizer if needed and a broad-spectrum sunscreen.
Step 5: Use once daily, in the morning.

Caution: For external use only. Keep out of reach of children. If product gets into the eyes, rinse with water right away. Sunburn alert: this product contains an alpha hydroxy acid (AHA) that may increase your skin's sensitivity to the sun and particularly the possibility of sunburn. Use a sunscreen, wear protective clothing and limit sun exposure while using this product and for a week afterwards. Store at 59–77°F (15–25°C), out of direct sunlight.

How is Exfoderm Forte different from Exfoderm?

Both are lightweight morning exfoliating lotions in Obagi's Nu-Derm line. Exfoderm Forte uses glycolic and lactic acids and is made for normal to oily and combination skin. The original Exfoderm uses phytic acid and is the gentler choice for normal to dry and sensitive skin. If your skin runs oily and tolerates acids well, choose Forte; if it's dry or reactive, start with Exfoderm.

Where does it go in my routine?

Mornings only. Cleanse, tone and apply Clear Fx if you use it, then smooth on a thin layer of Exfoderm Forte. Finish with moisturizer if you need it and a broad-spectrum sunscreen. In the Nu-Derm Fx System it's Step 4, the morning exfoliating step.

Can I use it with retinol or tretinoin?

Many routines do, with Exfoderm Forte in the morning and a retinoid at night, but an AHA and a retinoid together can add up to dryness or irritation. Introduce one product at a time, cut back if skin gets tight or flaky, and check with your provider if you use prescription tretinoin.

Will it sting?

A mild tingle when you first start is common with glycolic and lactic acids, especially on freshly shaved or irritated skin, and it should fade quickly. If you have burning, lingering redness or peeling, stop and check in with your provider. Keep it away from the eyes; if product gets into the eyes, rinse with water right away.

Do I really need sunscreen with it?

Yes. Obagi notes that this product contains an alpha hydroxy acid that may increase your skin's sensitivity to the sun, and particularly the possibility of sunburn. Wear a broad-spectrum sunscreen every day, cover up and limit sun exposure while you use it and for a week afterwards.
