The Polymer Behind Gel-Cream Textures
A long name for a simple effect: this copolymer is a pre-neutralized thickener that turns a watery base into the bouncy, gel-cream consistency now standard in lightweight moisturizers and eye products. It also keeps small amounts of oil suspended, so nothing separates in the jar.
Eye and night formulas make the best use of it. Revision Skincare DEJ Eye Cream and DEJ Night Cream both do, alongside Nectifirm and Intellishade Matte SPF 45. EltaMD uses it for the fluid feel of UV Clear SPF 46.
What does this copolymer feel like on the skin?
Cool and slightly springy going on, then invisible. It is the reason a gel-cream can be light enough for oily skin and still leave a hydrated finish — the texture comes from the polymer, not from added oil.
