Why the tint in tinted SPF is doing real work
Iron oxides are naturally occurring mineral pigments in red, yellow and black, blended to produce the shades in tinted sunscreens and mineral makeup. Their second job is the interesting one: they absorb visible light, the part of the spectrum that zinc oxide and titanium dioxide largely miss, which is why pigment-prone skin is so often steered toward tinted formulas specifically. Every Revision Intellishade shade uses them — Original SPF 45, TruPhysical SPF 45, Matte SPF 45 — as do Alastin HydraTint Pro Mineral SPF 36 and EltaMD UV Clear Tinted SPF 46.
Do tinted sunscreens really protect against visible light?
The iron oxide content is the reason a tinted mineral SPF behaves differently from an untinted one on skin that pigments easily. An untinted sunscreen still blocks UV — it simply does less about the visible end of the spectrum.
