Delivery vehicles, not just moisturizing lipids
A phospholipid has a water-loving head and two oil-loving tails, and that geometry is what lets it form the bilayer every cell membrane is built from. Cosmetic chemists exploit the same shape: phospholipids self-assemble into liposomes that carry a peptide or an antioxidant more evenly through a formula, and they condition the skin surface while they are at it.

Are phospholipids the same thing as ceramides?
Both are lipids, but they differ structurally and sit in different places. Ceramides are a major component of the skin's outer barrier; phospholipids dominate cell membranes and, inside a product, often act as carriers. Plenty of formulas include both.
