Sorbitan Isostearate in Rich Creams and Balms
Heavier textures — eye creams, neck creams, lip treatments — need an emulsifier that can carry a high oil load without turning greasy. Sorbitan isostearate does that job. Built from sorbitol and isostearic acid, it is an oil-loving emulsifier usually paired with a water-loving partner, and the combination is what gives a balm its cushioned slip rather than a waxy film.
Alastin Skincare leans on it heavily: Ultra Nourishing Moisturizer, Ultra Light Moisturizer and Restorative Neck Complex all contain it. On the Revision Skincare side you will find it in Youthful Lip Replenisher and DEJ Eye Cream.
What is the difference between sorbitan isostearate and polysorbate?
Both start from sorbitol, but polysorbates are ethoxylated and water-dispersible, while sorbitan isostearate is not — it prefers the oil phase. Formulators often use the two together to balance an emulsion from both sides.
