How is it different from a vitamin C serum?

Pure vitamin C (L-ascorbic acid) breaks down quickly once it is exposed to oxygen. Arctigenin Brightening Treatment brightens with ABSO, a stable, arctigenin-enriched burdock extract, plus white pine bark and ferulic acid. It's a good option if vitamin C has irritated your skin or oxidized before you finished the bottle.

Does it contain hydroquinone?

No. It is hydroquinone-free and relies on botanical brighteners. Epicutis reports that ABSO showed brightening activity comparable to hydroquinone and kojic acid in in-vitro (lab) testing. Lab results are not the same as a clinical trial on skin, so expect gradual, cosmetic brightening rather than prescription-strength lightening.
