What keeps an open jar safe for twelve months
Any formula containing water can grow bacteria, mold and yeast, and a preservative system is what prevents that between the day you open a product and the day you finish it. Modern systems are usually blends — phenoxyethanol with ethylhexylglycerin, or caprylyl glycol with caprylhydroxamic acid — because a combination covers a wider microbial range at lower individual concentrations.
