Products with Titanium Dioxide

Titanium dioxide is the second mineral UV filter, usually paired with zinc oxide to strengthen UVB coverage and lighten the texture of a sunscreen.

Zinc's Usual Partner in Mineral Sunscreen

Rarely used alone, titanium dioxide earns its place alongside zinc oxide. It is particularly efficient against UVB and shorter UVA wavelengths, so pairing the two lets a formulator reach a high SPF without loading in so much zinc that the product turns thick or chalky. Outside sun care it doubles as a white pigment, which is why it also appears in tinted moisturizers, primers, and some eye creams.

In this collection it is in the EltaMD UV Restore Tinted Broad-Spectrum SPF 40, Obagi SUZANOBAGIMD Physical Defense SPF 40, Alastin HydraTint Pro Mineral Sunscreen SPF 36, and Obagi ELASTIderm Eye Cream.

Is titanium dioxide fine to use on the face every day?

It is one of only two UV filters the FDA currently proposes as generally recognized as safe and effective, and it stays at the skin's surface rather than absorbing.
