Products with Limonene

Derived from citrus peel, limonene gives a formula its bright scent and must be declared by name on the ingredient list.

Limonene: Citrus Scent, Not an Active

Cold-pressed citrus peel is where limonene comes from, and its job in a formula is almost entirely sensory — it supplies the bright, clean note you notice when you open a cleanser or a lip treatment. It has mild solvent properties that help other oils stay evenly dispersed, but it is not there to change the look of lines, tone or texture.

SkinCeuticals is the heaviest user of it in our range, with Simply Clean Gel, Gentle Cleanser, Hydrating B5 Gel and HA Intensifier Multi-Glycan all declaring it. Revision Skincare's Triple-Action Exfoliator is on the list too.

Is limonene bad for your skin?

For most people, no — it is used at fractions of a percent. It can become sensitising as it oxidizes with air exposure, which is a good argument for keeping cleansers and gels tightly capped and using them within a reasonable window rather than for years.
